Cross-Sectional Imaging Fellowships

Two types of Fellowships are offered in Cross-Sectional Imaging:

  • Body Imaging (2 fellows/year):
    - One Body-fellowship: 6 months of Body CT, Chest CT, US, Body MR. Elective rotations in        other areas are optional.
    - One Body-cardiovascular imaging fellowship: 6 months of CT, US, body MR & 6 months        of cardiovascular imaging (MR, CT, nuclear medicine).
  • MRI (2 fellows/year):
    - Two fellowships include intensive training in Body MRI, including cardiovascular, (6-12        weeks of Musculoskeletal MRI optional)

Clinical
MRI

With a new hospital (Smilow Cancer Center) and new department of Radiology opening in October 2009, the clinical MRI service will include four 3.0T and five 1.5T scanners within Yale-New Haven Hospital and one off-site 1.5T GE scanner in a nearby facility. Fellows supervise and/or participate in the performance and interpretation of all body MR exams including cardiac, vascular, chest, breast, abdomen, and pelvis.  On the musculoskeletal rotation, fellows participate in performance and interpretation of all musculoskeletal MR examinations, including MR arthrograms.

CT and PET/CT

The CT service presently utilizes two 64 slice scanners, two 16 slice scanners, two 4 slice scanners (including for interventional procedures), which are deployed both within the hospital and at our out-patient facilities. The CT service performs a large volume of cases in all areas of the body, including CT colonography and coronary CT angiography. A PET/CT (16 slice scanner) is located in the nuclear medicine department, and body imaging fellows participate in interpretation (with CT and nuclear medicine attending physicians). Body fellows may also participate in CT-guided biopsies. Additional CT and PET-CT scanners will become operational in October, 2009 with the opening of Yale's Smilow Cancer Center.

US
The US service provides comprehensive training in all areas of US including duplex and color Doppler, abdominal, peripheral vascular, breast, small parts, and OB/GYN. Vascular US services are also provided on site in the vascular surgery clinic. The US rotation includes extensive experience in image-guided biopsy procedures. A new ultrasound clinic area will become operational in the Smilow Cancer Center when it opens in October, 2009 and it will include 9 ultrasound machines.

ED
A service component, with additional compensation, may be required in the Emergency Radiology Department.

Equipment
The imaging services are linked to a central image archive with numerous soft-copy image-viewing stations and advanced workstations positioned throughout the department. All cases are read on PACS and 3D workstations. Dictations are performed with Power Scribe voice recognition software. A wide variety of 3D and CAD workstations are available.

Research
Fellows, with supervision by faculty, are encouraged to participate in clinical or basic research projects. There is an array of whole body and animal research magnets in a dedicated research MR facility in the Yale University School of Medicine. These include 9 research scanners (with 1.5T, 3T, 4T, and 7T human scanners) for human and animal research. There are active basic research programs in cardiovascular MRI, MR spectroscopy, oncologic imaging, imaging processing, and contrast agents.

Conferences
There is a weekly departmental cross-sectional imaging conference, a weekly fellows’ conference (which includes didactic sessions on MR physics), and a weekly Body Club.  Every month, there is a Mammography/MR Correlation Conference.  Prominent guest speakers present Diagnostic Radiology Grand Rounds every other week from September to May.  There are also a variety of interdisciplinary conferences that fellows participate in along with radiology faculty.

Conference Schedule:
• Monday: Body Club
• Tuesday: Body/MR fellows conference, MR research conference
• Wed: Interesting case conference, Breast MR Correlation
• Thurs: Grand Rounds every other week Sept-May
• Interdisciplimary: GI cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, liver tumor board
• Many other interesting lectures in medical school and Yale campus

Environment
Yale University School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven Hospital are just a few blocks from the main Yale University campus. Living accommodations are affordable and readily available in New Haven and surrounding areas.

Yale-New Haven Hospital was founded in 1826 and is the fourth voluntary hospital in the United States. Today YNHH is a 944-bed private, not-for-profit teaching hospital affiliated with the Yale University Schools of Medicine and Nursing serving the needs of Connecticut, New England and beyond. YNHH has 6,000+ employees, including 1,200 registered nurses and a medical staff of 2,400.

Each year, Yale-New Haven Hospital treats about 40,000 inpatients and registers over 397,000 outpatient visits at its various clinics, including one-day surgery, specialty clinics, the emergency department, the Primary Care Center and others. The main campus includes Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center.  The new Yale Smilow Cancer Center is slated to open in October, 2009.

Application
Interested applicants should send a universal application, their curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation to our fellowship director. Copies of ECFMG and USMLE scores are NOT required for the application process. A photograph is requested but not required.
