Funding Sources

There are several comprehensive online databases that allow searches for general funding opportunities including those for radiology. An example is the COS (Community of Science) database, which is the world's most comprehensive funding resource, with more than 23,000 records representing nearly 400,000 opportunities, worth over $33 billion. Other large databases include IRIS, GrantsNet and the NIH. All of these are accessible through the Yale School of Medicine Grants and Contracts Web site. For guidelines and procedures for funding opportunities and proposal development, see Yale's Sponsored Projects Handbook and Principal Investigators Policies.

There is also a useful downloadable document called “Show me the Money: Online Search Strategies for Finding Research Funds” that gives detailed instructions on carrying out these searches.

Since these databases are so comprehensive it is worth first searching these using keywords that encompass your specific area of interest (if you have not yet found a specific area of research you can use a broad term such as “radiology”): the chances are that you will find most of the funding opportunities in your area of interest by doing a few searches, rather than having to go painstakingly to multiple sites of individual granting agencies or research sponsors. By registering yourself and your research interests at COS or the other databases, it is possible to get email alerts whenever new funding opportunities in your areas of interest present themselves.

The following are links to organizations that specifically fund or link to funding sources in radiology or imaging related research (in alphabetical order). The RSNA site has the largest number of grant announcements (including research fellowships) and should be checked out first.
